Hero — wide-plank custom hardwood running to the light, milled and finished in-house

Milled In-House · Finished to Order

Custom Hardwood, Built to Specification

Many species, milled to your dimensions, custom-finished in our shop or on your floor. This is the work Cal Coast was built on.

What We Control

What "custom" actually means

Off-the-shelf flooring gives you a handful of choices. Milling our own gives you control over every variable that decides how a floor looks, wears, and lasts.

Milling our own means we control the four things that decide how a floor looks and lasts:

Species

Milled in-house: White Oak, Red Oak, European & French Oak, Walnut, Hickory, Maple, and Pine — plus exotics like Brazilian Cherry, Ipe, and Mahogany.

Cut

Plainsawn, rift, or quartersawn. Rift & quartersawn give tighter linear grain, subtle ray fleck, and the most dimensional stability — less seasonal gapping and cupping.

Width & Wear Layer

From 1-inch strip to wide plank past 18 inches, with lengths up to 16 feet. Solid, or engineered with wear layers up to 6mm, which is the same refinish sanding life you'll get from a solid hardwood floor.

Texture

Smooth, wire-brushed, hand-scraped, or sawn, done in our shop or on the installed floor. Wire-brushing runs from light, which just opens the grain, to heavy, which pulls the soft wood out and leaves relief you can feel through the finish. Hand-scraping runs light to heavy too, in the style you want: long pulls, short scoops, chatter marks, scraped edges, or fully sculpted boards. Band saw, circular saw, and mill marks give a rough-sawn, straight-from-the-lumberyard look, and distressing adds dents, wormholes, and worn knots. Edges can be square, micro-beveled, full bevel, or pillowed. Texture and color get sampled together, because one changes how the other shows.

Custom Stain

Pigment stains, reactive stains, fuming, bleaching, and smoking, applied in our shop or on your floor. Pigment stains give you an exact, repeatable color on any species. Reactive stains work with the tannins in the wood, so the color comes from the grain itself. Color is often built in layers: a tinted sealer over the stain can cool, warm, whitewash, or soften the tone without going darker, and it's how we hit colors a single stain can't. We'll tell you which combination gets you the look you're after.

Custom Finish

Hardwax oil or polyurethane, chosen for the look and feel you want. Oil soaks in and leaves the floor matte and bare to the touch, like raw wood with the color brought up, and it can be tinted white, smoke, or warm to shift the tone. Poly sits on top as a smooth protective film you can see and feel, from dead-flat to high gloss, and kept water-clear it shows a stain or reactive color exactly as it was built. We'll sample both on your species before anything goes down.

The Finish Room

Color, stain & reactive finishing

Color is where most floors are won or lost, and it's where we've spent the most time. Beyond standard stains, we work in fuming, smoking, bleaching, and reactive treatments — chemistry that draws tone out of the wood itself instead of laying it on top, for depth you can't get from a can. We've run nearly every finish system worth using, from hardwax oils to water-based polyurethane, and we match the finish to how the floor will actually live — traffic, light, kids, pets — not just how it looks in a showroom.

Finishing

Finished on-site or off-site, whichever the floor needs

On-Site · Our Signature

Our finest work is finished in place. It's the only way to get a true square-edge sand — no micro-bevel hiding the seams — and when we hand-tool a floor, it's done after installation, so the character carries from one board to the next as a single continuous surface rather than board by board.

Off-Site · Controlled Environment

For projects that call for it, floors are finished in a controlled, climate-stable environment and delivered ready to install — consistent color and sheen, a hard-wearing cured finish, low odor and disruption in the home, and no cure-time wait once they're down.

We'll tell you which makes sense for your project — not which is easier for us.

Species We Mill

The Wood

We mill our own from premium unfinished lumber, so the species list isn't a catalog — it's what we reach for, and what each one brings to a floor.

Red oak strip flooring in a warm stain running through a doorway, milled and installed by Cal Coast Flooring
American Oak · milled in Inglewood

American Oak

American oak, red and white, is the backbone of the trade: hard, stable, and familiar underfoot. White oak takes almost any finish from natural to deep brown; red oak warms up and holds a stain. We mill both from premium unfinished stock.

Pale wide-plank European oak floor with a natural matte finish, milled and installed by Cal Coast Flooring
European Oak · milled in Inglewood

European Oak

European oak offers longer planks and a softer, more open grain than American oak — the look behind most wide-plank, lightly-smoked, and reactive-finished floors.

American walnut plank floor with rich chocolate grain and a clear finish, milled and installed by Cal Coast Flooring
American Walnut · milled in Inglewood

American Walnut

American walnut is the warm, chocolate-toned hardwood for rooms that want gravitas — rich color straight from the tree, no stain required.

Rift and quartered oak floor with straight, tight grain and ray fleck in a grey-brown stain, milled and installed by Cal Coast Flooring
Rift & Quartered Oak · milled in Inglewood

Rift & Quartered Oak

Rift-and-quartered oak is cut for grain, not yield: straight, tight, and free of the cathedral arches of plain-sawn boards — the most stable, most formal way to use oak.
